Breast Implant Options
Silicone Breast Implants
The most popular implant type today, silicone implants, are “shell casings” made of durable silicone that are embedded into the patient’s chest. These casings are then filled with more silicone but in gel form.
Modern silicone implants are also known as gummy bear implants, named for their similar structure and feel to gummy bears. The silicone gel used within gummy bear implants has a squishy but pliable consistency.
Gummy bear implants wrap around the breasts’ natural contour. The result is the patient has a more ample version of their natural breast.
Silicone breast implants come in both smooth and textured varieties. Textured varieties tend to stay in place better as they nestle more deeply into breast tissue.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are composed of a flexible and thin silicon “shell casing” that is embedded under a patient’s breast tissue or muscle, depending on the patient’s natural anatomy. Then, it is filled with varying amounts of a saline solution (basically, salty water). This allows for a range of sizes and firmness depending on the volume of saline solution injected. It also allows for a smaller incision to be made.
Saline implants are considered safe for patients 18 and older, whereas silicone implants are generally recommended for patients 22 years and older. Saline implants are generally less expensive than silicone implants, making them a popular option for patients with budgetary considerations. They are FDA approved for 10–20 years.
Gummy Bear Implants vs. Rounded Implants
There are two primary shapes of breast implants: Rounded implants and gummy bear implants.
Rounded implants are half domes — as though someone cut a perfectly symmetrical sphere right down the middle. Rounded implants are preferred by patient’s seeking bolder results as they add fullness to both the top and bottom part of the breast. Rounded implants add more cleavage and lift compared to teardrop implants.
Gummy bear implants are made of a highly viscous silicone gel, giving them a firmer and more solid feel. The silicone gel used in gummy bear implants is thicker and less likely to leak or ripple compared to traditional silicone implants. Mimic the shape of a real breast, with more fullness in the lower portion and gradually sloping downward to a be level with the collar bone in the upper half of the breast.
Gummy bear implants are preferred by patient’s seeking out more natural looking breast enhancement operations. They are also less likely to shift placement once implanted.
Frequently Asked Questions
The decision about what size breast implant to get is a personal one that depends on various factors, including your body type, desired outcome, and medical history.
It is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate your individual situation and provide guidance on the best implant size for you. They will take into account your existing breast tissue, chest wall measurements, and other factors such as your lifestyle and preferences to help you make an informed decision.
During your consultation, your surgeon may use 3D imaging technology to simulate the potential outcome of various implant sizes, allowing you to get a better sense of what you can expect.
On average, breast implant surgery typically takes between one to two hours to complete.
Recovery time can vary depending on the patient and the extent of the surgery. Most patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities within a week or two following the procedure but should avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for several weeks to allow for proper healing. Your surgeon will provide you with specific post-operative instructions to help ensure a successful recovery.
The FDA has approved silicone breast implants for 10–20 years.
Generally, with intermittent check ups and no issues, you can keep breast implants in for even longer. Many people have breast implants for 25+ years with no issues.
